A big welcome to Kung Fu Tea, joining the festival from its nearest location in Millburn, New Jersey. Kung Fu Tea serves bubble tea, sometimes called pearl milk tea, boba juice, boba milk tea or simply boba. This drink was invented in in Taichung, Taiwan in the 1980s.
Kung Fu Tea explains how bubble tea is made:
“There are many variations of bubble tea with a wide range of ingredients. Most recipes contain a base of tea which is mixed or shaken with fruit or milk. Ice-blended versions of the tea are usually mixed with fruit or syrup, resulting in a slushy consistency. Chewy tapioca balls – also known as bubbles/boba – are often added, hence the name: bubble tea. While there are many other toppings, like Nata jelly, pudding, herbal jelly, the bubbles remain the crowd favorite.”
In the 1990s, bubble tea swept most of Asia, arriving in the United States in the 2000s. Now, the drink is a favorite of many Asians and non-Asians throughout the world.
Lunar Fest NJ 2018 is happy to be able to share this cultural food phenomenon with festival goers.
